Gung Hay Fat Choy

"Pigs have a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life."
Today is the Chinese New Year for the year of the pig.

People born in the year of the pig were born in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, or 2007.

The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house.* He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.

(*I wonder if this is the source of the story of the 3 little pigs!)

My friend Nancianne is born around the Chinese New Year (which is a moveable feast) and has a lovely tea for friends to celebrate both the new year and her birthday.  This is always the adornment of her coffee table.

Two of the most common food symbols of the Chinese New Year are tangerines and oranges. Whereas tangerines represent wealth, oranges are a popular symbol of good luck. ... Oranges and tangerines are also a bright, vibrant orange, a happy color that's associated with good fortune.

She sets a beautiful table.

This year one of the guests had brought a gift for each of us.

Inside each envelope was a $5 Starbucks gift card, which was very thoughtful.

The gathering of women was small (only 8 fit around her table, she says), but were all women that I usually see just once a year, at this tea.  Yet we have a marvelous time getting caught up.  This year I learned that three of my friends had been adopted.  Who knew?

Today is media day around here.  With computer guru Tom here, Walt is buying a new laptop to replace his very old laptop, he is setting up a gmail account and both of us are going to make sure that important companies know that our new email addresses are with gmail.  And then tomorrow we'll switch from Davis Community Network, which we have been with since we first got internet connection, to Comcast, which will make especially Walt happier since it will make his internet connection more reliable and faster.

So after today, my e-mail address will be basykes@gmail.com
